Katy concerned at Government attempts to water down energy targets

Katy has expressed concern at documents leaked to a national newspaper which appear to show that the Government has been lobbying to water down the proposals to increase the European targets for renewable energy. The current European target that 20% of EU energy will be generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind, is due to run out in 2020 and there is currently nothing to replace it.  According to the documents the Government has attempted to weaken proposals to increase this target to a potential 30% preferring a vague wording which suggests that renewable energy should make up a ‘significantly increased share of the mix’.

Speaking about this, Katy said, ‘This Government promised to be the greenest ever however, again and again they are showing that they are not committed to supporting sustainable energy.  Indeed, this attempt to water down proposals shows that they are yet again listening to the big six energy companies rather than those whose who are being affected by the rocketing energy prices’

‘If the Government continues to follow this path, then it will be undoing all the positive work done by the previous Government on this issue.’
