John Mann's unique school that takes the brightest young people from an area with traditionally low aspirations to London for the week will be taking place again from next Monday. Between the 14th and 17th July John Mann MP will be taking forty Year 10 and 11 pupils from Bassetlaw schools around London to learn at first hand about industry, business, arts, sport, the media and politics.
Among the many exciting opportunities the young people will have is the chance to interrogate Energy Minister Malcolm Wicks on UK energy policy, to learn about financial inclusion in the Treasury and to see how modern media works in GMTV studios with their political correspondent, Gloria DePiero.
The school starts today with a first visit to a power station in John Mann's constituency. After the weekend the 16 year olds will travel down to London with their teachers.
John Mann said "this is a great opportunity for young people from my area to learn about politics and business, and to see what they can aspire to. No other MP has anything nearly as extensive as this Summer School, and I know that having these intelligent and hard working young people in Parliament is going to blow away some of the cobwebs."
Last year half of the summer school stayed in contact with John and formed the Bassetlaw Youth Alcohol Forum, who presented their report to Home Secretary Jacqui Smith last week. |
