Sir Michael Pitt released his Floods Review today. The Review calls for urgent and fundamental changes in the way the country is adapting to the likelihood of more frequent and intense periods of rainfall. Sir Michael Pitt has looked for practical solutions to highly complex problems and has thought carefully about the public interest. In total, he has made 92 recommendations, some of which are challenging and require strong leadership to see them through.
John Mann made the proposal to the Pitt Review that the Environment Agency take overall responsibility for all waterways and this is an accepted recommendation.
Other recommendations include the proposal that all councils should collate and map the drainage assets (over and underground) in the area and keep a record of their ownership and condition.
Pitt also recommended that the Government should establish a single set of guidelines for local authorities on sand bag distribution rather than leaving it to local discretion.
In welcoming the review John Mann commented "this is a thorough and well thought out response to the severe floods of 2007. There is a strong probability that events on a similar scale will happen again and therefore we must have the infrastructure in place to deal with this eventuality. Both myself and Notts County Council made submissions to the report but I was disappointed to see that Bassetlaw District Council failed to make a contribution. We had large scale flooding throughout Bassetlaw and the council have clearly failed to formulate a strategy for future flood relief". |
