From today (1st April 2008) every person over 60 and eligible disabled people will be able to travel for free on local buses from 9.30am until 11pm every weekday and all day at weekends.
Until now pensioners with a free bus pass have only been able to travel as far the borders of Nottinghamshire and with the close proximity of the county borders of Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire many residents of Bassetlaw have not been able to experience its full benefit. From April onwards people can hop on a bus and travel wherever they want, into whatever county they want, for free.
Its predicted that approximately 26,100 Bassetlaw resident are entitled to apply for a concessionary bus pass.
John Mann commented "I am delighted that the government have listened to local concerns and introduced a scheme that will benefit so many people. This not only gives people the freedom to travel but I can see it economically assisting shops, cafés and tourist attractions."
John also said "I want to make sure that every eligible Bassetlaw resident gets their bus pass."
