England to Field a Team on European Cup Final Day

Whilst two European teams are battling it out in Vienna on Sunday, England's finest are taking on Brazil’s best at Bola Pra Frente in Brazil.

Manton Spitfires are traveling to Brazil from Worksop, Nottinghamshire where they will be playing their Brazilian equivalents on Sunday 29 June making them the only England team playing a national side on Euro 2008 Cup Final Day.

The Manton Spitfires are an Under 16s Junior Football team that play in the Mansfield Chad Youth League.

The young people are all from the fifth most deprived ward in the East Midlands and its mainly through their own efforts and the support of the Manton Spitfires organisers that they are going to Brazil.

Traveling is not something that these young people do often. Most never stray further than Worksop and have never been to London or beyond. Four of the group did not have passports before this trip and have never been abroad before.

The Bassetlaw to Brazil Project was initiated by John Mann, Member of Parliament for Bassetlaw.  Its aim is to encourage youth exchanges through sport and dance involving children from the poorest areas of Brazil and Bassetlaw to develop youth leadership skills and to raise aspirations and expectations.

In 2006 John Mann raised £50,000 to begin the youth exchanges and Manton Spitfires have raised the £20,000 to fund their trip themselves.

John Mann commented "Whilst UK viewers will be watching the ooh's and the aahs of two European teams battling it out, Brazilian television will be showing England v Brazil.  I am delighted that after eighteen months of hard fundraising these young people will have achieved their dream of playing football in Brazil".
