ITS
NOT THE BEST STATUE IN THE COUNTRY BUT ITS IN THE TOP
ONE
Graham
Allen, Member of Parliament for Nottingham North, and a born and
raised Nottingham lad, today spoke of his delight at the unveiling
of a new statue of the legendary Brian Clough in the
city.
Mr Allen
said, “My hometown of
Nottingham has a fine sporting heritage, which includes former
heavyweight boxing champion Bendigo, and of course the world’s
greatest archer! But
what Brian Clough achieved was unique even in our
city.”
“To take a
team from the old second division and turn them into double
European Cup Champions was a phenomenal achievement that
invigorated and gave hope to our city, just as the worst excesses
of Thatcherism were taking hold on the
area.”
Graham
added, “It proves
just how well loved in Nottingham Brian Clough still is, that the
statue has been funded entirely through donations from
fans.”
Clough may
have once said “don't
send me flowers when I'm dead, send them to me now if you like
me” but Graham is sure the time is right to build a fitting
tribute in the city, which will become a monument everyone can
enjoy.
