Dorothy Ngomo Executive Director of the National Organisation for Nurses and Midwives in Malawi visited the Whittington Hospital to promote the For All Campaign, asking the UK government to champion the role of public health care in developing countries.
After the visit to the Whittington hospital Dorothy said it was “absolutely amazing”. She was totally overwhelmed by the high quality resources and technical support, as well as the skills and leadership of the midwives. Like in Malawi, the midwives and nurses here have the same passion for caring for mothers and babies,
Dorothy asked the staff if they ever experienced a women dying from complications in childbirth and it was a struggle for staff to remember when or if this had ever happened. In the UK 1 in 10,000 women die in childbirth, whereas in Malawi they are lucky if a day goes by without losing a woman in childbirth as 16 women die daily from maternal mortality in Malawi.
Karen said, “to have access to a fantastic, free mother and neonatal facility like the one at eh Whittington Hospital is something that sadly the women in Malawi can only dream of. It is vital that we share our knowledge and experience and highlight the plight of women and nurses working in Malawi and across Sub-Saharan Africa” |
