Voting is an essential part of democracy. It is chance to be able to voice our opinion and take part in deciding who represents us. In the past many people have struggled, both in the UK and abroad, to gain the right to vote.

Between August and November each local authority sends out an annual canvass of electors form to every household in its area. This form lists all of the people currently on the register at your address. You should add anyone who should be registered and cross-out anyone who is no longer living at your address. You should then return the form to your local authority.

A new electoral register, including any changes made to your registration details during the annual canvass, is then published at the beginning of December.
If your details change (for example you move house) after December you do not have to wait until the next canvass to update your information. You can download forms from the Electoral Registration Department of your local council to revise your registration.
