New hope in Manea family's fight for justice over German "killer doctor"

Richard HowittThe continuing fight for justice for the family of the Manea man killed by an incompetent foreign doctor, have been given renewed hope with a vote at the European Parliament in Strasbourg today (Tuesday 15 November 2011).

Cambridgeshire Euro MP Richard Howitt said German authorities should be held to account for their failure to allow the locum Doctor Ubani to be extradited back to Britain to face British courts after the unlawful killing of 70 year-old David Gray of Manea, Cambridgeshire.

Labour's Richard Howitt MEP welcomed the European Parliament's vote which called for mandatory sharing of information between health services in the different European countries, which the Labour Euro MP claimed would have saved David Gray's life.

Richard Howitt MEP told the European Parliament debate:

"On behalf of Stuart and Rory Gray, their 70 year-old father would still be alive, if the mandatory blacklist system the European Parliament calls for today had been in place back in 2008.

"I am also incensed that Germany failed to extradite the doctor involved, despite the fact that an email dated 16 March 2009 to the Cambridgeshire Constabulary clearly shows the European Arrest Warrant was received before Daniel Ubani was finally judged to be incompetent. His case should under the existing law have been heard in British courts.

"Today MEPs are calling for a change to the law to clarify beyond doubt that language checks for foreign doctors are perfectly permissible, as well as requiring an "alert" system to ensure doctors under disciplinary investigation in one EU country cannot escape penalty in every country.

"But I say with greatest respect to my German colleagues that changing the law only works if every EU country respects the law that is passed."
