Labour call for research into throw away bags

Labour call for research into throw away bagsShopping bags

Councillor Kate Haigh has asked the City Council to study ways of reducing the use of throw out shopping bags in Gloucester.

Approximately 220 shopping bags a year are given to every person in the country. Use of the bags is harmful to the environment and many bags end up being washed out to sea where they kill or injure hundreds of thousands of birds and mammals. Even 'biodegradable' bags cause environmental problems as they give off greenhouse gases as they decompose. Although many people say they reuse these bags it is often as a bin liner from where they go straight to landfill.

Kate said "It is not just the problems that the bags themselves cause that concerns me, I want to raise awareness of how unsustainable this 'throw away' society is.

"We need to reduce the amount we waste so we don't have to implement solutions such as giant incinerators.  I hope Gloucester can be amongst the first Councils in the Country to change peoples attitudes to this wasteful habit"
