  Bedford and Kempston

The name Bedford is most likely derived from the word Beda, a Saxon chief who settled on the River Great House thirteen centuries ago. Another possibility is that the name indicates the shallower point of the River Ouse, on whose riverbank the Bedford castle - now destroyed - was built.

Bedford has a population of 85.000 circa whilst Kempston has 25.000 circa.
