Hackney has been nominated for the best Cycle borough of the year in the London Transport Awards.
Hackney has more people that cycle to work than any other place in Britain. We are committed to getting more people on their bikes in the Borough and promoting the benefits of this healthy, low cost and environmentally friendly way to travel.
Through investing in cycle training, safety and improving cycle routes in Hackney, the Labour Council has achieved the following over the last two years which has put Hackney in the running for this prestigious award:
- 749 children and 415 adults taking advantage of free cycle training offered by the Council
- Completing a 6.5k Olympic Walking and Cycling route linking up six parks in Hackney, and upgraded routes along the Regents Canal and Lee Valley Park
- 37 social housing estates fitted with cycle parking lockers and cages
- 9 Cycle pit stops and Dr Bike events
- 120 primary school students cycling 6 miles to the Olympic park for the 'Bike Across the Borough event during Bike Week
In addition, Hackney was the first council in the country to offer a Safe Urban Driving course, and continues to be the only one that provides this free of charge. This course is for any HGV driver who passes through Hackney and trains drivers to be aware of vulnerable road users.
Cllr Feryal Demirci, Cabinet member for Neighbourhoods said: "Hackney is leading the way in promoting cycling - and that is reflected in our nomination for the Best Cycle Borough of the year award. 13% of residents in Hackney cycle to work, and we have already exceeded the 5% target for all cycling journeys set by the Mayor of London.
But we know we have to continue to do all we can to make cycling as safe as possible, and we will work closely with local cycling groups and promote the Safer Urban Driving course for HGV drivers operating in Hackney."
