Thank you to all of those who managed to attend the meeting on the Waverly Link Road on 28th February. We apologise for the short notice and are aware that many people did not actually receive their invite until after the event. Unfortunately, we were only informed that the council intended to hold the meeting 2 days before the event, but sent out the letters first class on the 26th nonetheless. If you were unable to attend the event, for any reason, but would like to make a contribution please get in touch: Either by...

I am in full agreement with
local residents whom are opposing the recent application by
Aldi to build a new store on the Drakehouse Lane. I have written to
their Cheif Executive to express my views and will continue to
actively engage myself within this matter. Below is an copy of my
letter:
Dear
Mr Foley
I am
writing to you with regard to the planning application for the
proposed store on Drakehouse Lane, Sheffield near to the Crystal
Peaks shopping centre both of which are in my
Constituency.
I
would like to inform you that I will be raising my objection to the
application as I believe that the location is
unsuitable.
I...

Speaking to Labour Party members in his constituency last night, Clive Betts MP (Sheffield Attercliffe): • welcomed this week’s announcement that, from this October, it will nolonger be legal to use customers' tips to make up the minimum wage and theconfirmation that any tips left for staff will be in addition to basic pay • welcomed the increase in resources for enforcement • warned that the National Minimum Wage is under threat. The National Minimum Wage faced massive opposition from the Conservatives when it was initially introduced but it has undoubtidly been a positive move. We are therefore not surprised...

Getting Yorkshire on the Fast Track
|
Communications and connections with London are vital now for individuals and buisnesses throughout Yorkshire and the UK therefore the launch of a new campaign to build a high-speed network to the capital is invaluable. The campaign - which I'm spearheading with a Leeds MP - will attempt to persuade the Government to build a high-speed railway, with trains running at 200mph, into the Yorkshire region, which would also bring significant benefits for Nottinghamshire too. The current Government plans involve a high-speed railway from London to Birmingham with the possibility of extending the line northwards later. However, the plans involve an...

Betts Slams Lib Dem Leader on Education Cuts
|
The Leader of the Liberal Democrats, Nick Clegg MP, has announced he wants to abandon the Governments target of ensuring that at least 50% of children went on to higher education. I challenge Mr Clegg to identify those children from his Hallam constituency to whom he's going to deny this opportunity. Recent figures suggest the number of young people from Sheffield going to University has increased substantially from 1415 to 2070 in the last ten years. Ten years ago, many of these would never have believed they had this chance but Labour's commitment to higher education has made this dream...

Health and Safety issues appear
in the local and national media on a near daily basis. The blame
culture in this country seems to be well and truly entrenched and
often it appears the use of simple common sense would suffice. The
banning of conkers and pancake races both seem to be instances
where this has flown out the window in favour of an overtly
cautious approach. This is however hardly
surprising; when something goes wrong people look for someone to
blame, the victim, the family and the mdeia will first look for
someone to blame and then search for someone to sure. Making a
mistake can be disatrous financially...

Are you registered to vote?
|
"Democracy is the worst form of government except all the others that have been tried." - Churchill's famous statement has been echoed throughout history and to a certain extent it may well be true. Unfortunatly his personal expierences do not appear to have reflected this,"'the best argument against democracy if a five- minute converstion with the average voter." I believean essentisal part of the democratic process is an ongoing engagement between the elected and the electorate. Unfortunatly today's media which is cynical and obsessed with trivia has does not help this continued dialogue and can weaken what is a crucial...

Tackling the Global Economic Crisis
|
The affects of the incompetence and negligence of a number of banks around the world has caused a global economic crisis which seems to have ever increasing consequences on a daily basis. These effects appear to be unbounded with global implications and as such require a global commitment if they're going to be tackled globally. Many commentators and critics have suggested Gordon Brown is responsible to which my response is they have clealy got their eyes and ears closed to what is happening throughout Europe, the USA and the rest of the world. Last week the G20 met to discuss...

For most the financial crisis
has hit them hard. The loss of jobs or a reudction in income has
left many struggling to meet their financial
commitments. Historically it is during this
period that loan sharks have flourished. As an unlicensed
moneynlender they operate outside the law. If you borrow from them
its usually on very bad terms paying an extortionate rate of
interest and with the possibility of harressment if you fall behind
on your repayments. The best advice for dealing with
loan sharks is 'don't'. Check if a lender is licensed (020 7211
8608); if not, don’t touch them. If you have borrowed money from
a loan shark you...

Betts calls on Council to help in Rent Increases
|
Following Margaret Beckett's - Housing Minister - announcement that money will be made available to Council's to subsidise the proposed increase in rent I am pressing Sheffield City Council to apply for this extra money to cut the rent rise from 6.2% to 3.1%. I have written to Councillor Bob McCann, Sheffield City Council's Cabinet member, asking him to ensure the Council applies for this money. I have also once again raised the issue about the Council's failure to bid for government funding which would enable the purchase of empty properties in the private sector to be let to those...

Royal Mail Must Not Go Private
|
I believe the Royal Mail to be a
an important part of British Society and am in full support of the
movement to ensure it stays 100% in public ownership. Following
correspondence will a constituent I have signed the motion which
fully supports this notion and shares a vision of a wholly
publicly-owned, intergrated Royal Mail Group.
This motion believes the six
days a week delivery service and the move by the Government to
transfer the duty of postal regulation to the communications
watchdog OFCOM from POSTCOM will ensure a better service to the
public. I welcome the Government's
commitment to guarentee the Royal Mail's pension fund which...

Betts Supports Campaign to Save the British Pub
|
I am throwing my full support
behind the campaign to 'Save the British Pub' and as such I have
joined over 150 MPs signing a motion against the planned rise in
tax on beer. Across the country five public houses are closing
every day putting up to 40,000 jobs in the industry in jeopardy.
The Campaign is attempting to mobilise public and political support
in the belief supermarkets offering cheap deals without the level
of restrictions required of public houses alongside the proposed
increases in tax rises in the Pre-Budget Report are placing
traditional public houses at even greater risk of closing
down. This campaign is also supported by
the...

Rail contract brings national joy and opportunities for Sheffield
|
I am delighted Sheffield is on the short list for a new
manufacturing plant to build the new electric and diesel rolling
stock by British-led consortium Agility Trains. The Secretary of
State has announced Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Gateshead are the other
contenders being actively considered so it is now down to
Sheffield to show its worth. I emplore the entire Sheffield Community - the City Council, the
Chamber of Commerce, Trades Unions and Yorkshire Forward, alongside
the MPs and local people - to demonstrate Sheffield is the right
choice for the plant. The skills, talents and knowledge of
Sheffield workers, alongside the technological, educational and
industrial infrastructure demonstrate the enormous capacity...

Do you have diabetes? I challenge you to find out
|
I am giving my suppot to a
campaign to raise awareness for diabetes. Diabetes is a condition
in which the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood is too high
because the body cannot use it properly. If undetected it can lead
to serious health conditions resulting in kidney
problems, strokes and heart attacks. Silver Star, a charity
campaigning to improve diabetes awareness, is holding a number of
events demonstrating just how easy it is to test for diabetes. I
took the test myself, it was very easy and only took two minutes -
I'm pleased it was negative. It is estimated more than half a
million people in the...

Sport at Handsworth Grange School recieves a Boost
|
I am delighted to announce Handsworth Grange School has been awarded £225,000 to support its current project for all-weather pitches. Ed Balls - Secretary of State for Children and Schools - has announced the government will be investing £21million in 75 sports colleges across the country with a specific focus on ensuring that sports pitches can be used in the evening and through the winter to improve their facilities with flood lights, artificial turf and new tented style sports halls. I have lobbyed Minister's in support of Handsworth Grange's application for many months as I believe it to be an...

Free Theatre Tickets for Young People!!!!!
|
The Department for Culture,
Media and Sport has invested £2.5million to fund a scheme that will
deliver FREE theatre tickets for people under
26. The Arts Council, working with over 200 venues, will attempt to
diustribute over 600,000 tickets over the next two years in an
attempt to attract a new audience of theatre attendees. This scheme has also recieved
backing from the world of celebrity in the form of Kevin Spacey and
Eddie Izzard too. Eddie Izzard said: "I think free theatre tickets
for young people is a great idea, especially as things are getting
tough financially right now. I am very pleased that the Labour
Party has launched...
