THE mother of a man who died in prison from dehydration has shown Lord Chancellor Jack Straw photographs of her son's dead body.
Mark arranged the meeting between Mr Straw and Pamela Green, whose son Martin Green died in Blakenhurst Prison nearly six years ago.
Mr Green, originally from Newhall, but latterly of Durham Close, Midway, died 11 days after admission to the prison.
The inquest into his death, which concluded last October, stated that the medical care given was inadequate and criticised the failure of the prison authorities to organise his transfer to hospital
when it was acutely needed.
The delay between Martin’s death and the inquest was filled by a lengthy police investigation into the circumstances of his death and long deliberation by the Crown Prosecution Service over whether
criminal charges should be laid against either medical or prison staff. They decided not to prosecute.
Martin's mum, Pamela Green, travelled to the House of Commons with Mark to meet Mr Straw on Monday.
Mrs Green showed Mr Straw a photograph of her son's body to highlight the alleged lack of care given to him by prison and medical staff.
Mark said: "Pam brought along the appalling photographs of Martin after his death, which illustrated the staggering lack of care that he faced. Although he had received the full brief of what had
happened, the inquest verdict and other reports from the prison, to hear it from Pam was new to him.
"We went through some of the issues about the care that Martin had failed to receive and I am pursuing several issues from that.
"While Mr Straw is constrained by the fact that a civil action is going to be taking place on behalf of Martin's children he is not able to formally apologise for what happened as that would be
admitting liability. We would like to move to an early resolution of that claim."
