Biography

John was re-elected as the MP for Warley receiving 52.9% of the vote on the 6th of May. Before the General Election John was a Minister in the Whip's Office and had the official role of Comptroller of Her Majesty's Household. John previously served in the government as Minister of State for the Armed Forces, Minister for Transport and Minister for Northern Ireland.

John was Opposition Whip with responsibility for Employment, Trade and Industry and Parliamentary Business from 1992-1994. Oposition spokesman on Northern Ireland from 1994-1995, and on Defence from 1995-1997. Before entering Parliament John was a National Officer for the Electrical, Electronic, Telecommunications and Plumbing Union.

He was a Bromley Borough Councillor from 1970 to 1974 and was elected as the MP for Birmingham Northfield from 1982 to 1983. He was elected as the MP for Warley West in 1992-1997 and Warley in 1997.

John Spellar was born in Bromley in 1947, and was educated at Bromley Parish Primary School, Dulwich College and St. Edmunds Hall, Oxford (Philosophy, Politics, Economics).

John enjoys gardening and reading.
