At the General Election on May 5th 2005, I was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Norwich South, with a majority of over 3,000 votes. At what was undoubtedly a difficult election for the Labour Party nationally I was delighted that the Labour vote held up so well. The Liberal Democrats campaigned hard in Norwich South, but were unable to make the breakthrough that they had predicted. Once again I am indebted to all the members of Norwich Labour Party who put in so many hours campaigning for a Labour victory. Over 800 Norwich Labour Party members worked tirelessly throughout the campaign period, delivering leaflets, knocking on doors and telephoning voters. This fantastic result is a testament to all of their hard work, and I would like to thank each and every one of them. Nationally the Labour Party won a historic third term, with a majority of 65 seats in Parliament. Our majority may now be smaller than it was in our first and second terms, but considering that the Labour Party has never before won three successive elections to have a majority of this size after eight years in office is an impressive achievement.
