2012 Olympic Games

The Minister of the Olympics, Tessa Jowell, has said that The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) and the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) are committed to promoting ethical principles consistent with the Olympic Charter.

The LOGOC and ODA are meeting regularly with the PlayFair Alliance and the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) in order to ensure that procurement officials seek to work with suppliers who have a good track record in human rights and using goods and materials produced ethically. This includes seeking suppliers who do not have discriminatory practices and who do not use child or bonded labour.

As the official sponsor and sportswear supplier for the 2012 Olympic Games, Adidas has agreed to the full provisions of LOCOG's sustainability requirements. Adidas also joined the Fair Labor Association in the US in 1999, and was reported to have met stringent social, ethical and environmental criteria.

I can assure you that I am committed to the protection of workers’ rights and the promotion of fair trade and I am currently in contact with Megan Lass, from the ODA authority, to enquiry on the positive effects the 2012 Games might have for Swindon.

I have written to Tessa Jowell on this matter and will work the Ministers to ensure that the Fair Trade Initiative will be upheld regarding the 2012 London Olympic Games.
